Ask ten editors what they charge and you'll get ten different answers. That's because "YouTube editing" covers everything from simple cuts to full retention-focused production with strategy attached. Rather than quote market rates that change constantly, this guide explains how pricing works so you can compare offers properly.
The three common pricing models
1. Per video
Most freelancers charge per finished video, with the price depending on length and complexity. This is simple and flexible, and works well for creators with irregular upload schedules. The downside is that there's usually no ongoing strategy, and each video is treated as a standalone job.
2. Monthly retainer
A retainer covers a set number of videos, or a set amount of work, each month for a fixed fee. It gives you predictable costs and reserved capacity, so your editor keeps time free for your channel. Retainers suit creators on a steady schedule.
3. Growth partnership
At the top end, some agencies offer partnerships that include editing plus strategy: retention analysis, hooks and structure, titles and thumbnails, and a process for compounding growth. These cost more because the agency is taking responsibility for results, not just output.
What drives the cost
- Video length. A 25-minute deep dive takes far longer than a 6-minute explainer.
- Editing complexity. Motion graphics, animation, custom charts and sound design add time.
- Footage quality and volume. Hours of raw footage take longer to review and cut.
- Turnaround. Fast, reliable turnaround usually costs more.
- Revisions. Unlimited or multiple revision rounds are priced in.
- Strategy. Retention analysis, hook redesign and packaging advice add value and cost.
How to judge value instead of price
The cheapest editor is rarely the best value, and the most expensive isn't always either. The better question is what the editing does for your channel. If better retention leads to more views, more subscribers and more revenue from ads, sponsors or your own products, the right edit pays for itself. If it doesn't move those numbers, even a cheap edit is expensive.
